Use print coloring pages and one of those crayon methods for the following classroom art lesson.

RESIST TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Trace on the photocopied picture outline with crayon.
Thick lines perform best.
Brush within the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.
The waxed lines will resist the paint as well as the picture will glow through.

Variation 2:

Color a lot of the picture with crayon. Leave some areas white.
Brush over the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.

Variation 3:

Draw within the lines with crayon.
Paint the image with numerous colors.
The crayon lines could make the picture better to paint.
They will stop edges bleeding into the other person.

Variation 4:

This is not a resist but it’s a fantastic extension from the previous activities.
Paint the photo with watercolors.
When the paint is dry, use crayons to include detail and depth of color.

RUBBING TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Rip off a smaller sheet of paper that is in regards to the height and width of a matchbox.
Use a crayon to scribble thickly on top of the paper.
Turn the paper over and using your thumb rub the crayon on to the photo.
This results in a very soft smooth effect.

Variation 2:

Color an area of the photo with a textured object placed underneath.
Sandpaper, string, crumpled paper, bricks, bark, leaves, signs and rocks can make interesting patterns. Experiment which has a bit of blank paper first.

Variation 3:

Use grated pieces or shavings of crayon to generate a swirling effect.
Sprinkle the crayon on to the picture and then rub them with your thumb.

This is effective the use of different colors together.
It makes effective animal fur, storm clouds or grass.

TRANSPARENT TECHNIQUE

Go over the outline of the image with black crayon.
Color the remainder of the image thickly with crayon.
If possible use a small piece of cotton wool or cloth to polish the picture.
Heat in the friction of rubbing melts the crayon and generates a smooth shiny effect.
Apply a smaller amount of vegetable oil to a cotton wool ball.
Gently rub the oil over the back of the image.
The oil is likely to make the picture almost transparent.
Students might be in the oil soaked balls in a paint tray.
Encourage these to review and in the picture to spread the oil.
Hang the image in the classroom window to create a stained glass effect.
