RESIST TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Trace on the photocopied picture outline with crayon.
Thick lines work most effectively.
Brush over the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.

Color most of the picture with crayon. Leave some areas white.
Brush over the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.

Variation 3:

Draw in the lines with crayon.
Paint the picture with any number of colors.
The crayon lines could make the picture simpler to paint.
They will eradicate edges bleeding into the other.

Variation 4:

This is not a resist yet it’s a fantastic extension from the previous activities.
Paint the picture with watercolors.
When the paint is dry, use crayons to incorporate detail and depth of color.

RUBBING TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Rip off a little piece of paper which is concerning the height and width of a matchbox.
Use a crayon to scribble thickly on the paper.
Turn the paper over and taking advantage of your thumb rub the crayon on to the picture.
This generates a very soft smooth effect.

Variation 2:

Color a region of the image using a textured object placed underneath.
Sandpaper, string, crumpled paper, bricks, bark, leaves, signs and rocks can make interesting patterns. Experiment with a piece of blank paper first.

Variation 3:

Use grated pieces or shavings of crayon to create a swirling effect.
Sprinkle the crayon on to the picture after which rub these with your thumb.

This is useful the use of different colors together.
It makes effective animal fur, storm clouds or grass.

TRANSPARENT TECHNIQUE

Go in the outline of the picture with black crayon.
Color the remainder of the photo thickly with crayon.
If possible use a little little bit of cotton wool or cloth to polish the photo.
Heat through the friction of rubbing melts the crayon and results in a smooth shiny effect.
Apply a small amount of vegetable oil to some cotton wool ball.
Gently rub the oil in the back of the photo.
The oil can make the picture almost transparent.
Students may be because of the oil soaked balls in a very paint tray.
Encourage the crooks to check out and in the picture to spread the oil.
Hang the photo in a classroom window to create a stained glass effect.
