RESIST TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Trace over the photocopied picture outline with crayon.
Thick lines perform best.
Brush over the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.
The waxed lines will resist the paint as well as the picture will glow through.

Variation 2:

Color a lot of the picture with crayon. Leave some areas white.
Brush over the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.

Variation 3:

Draw over the lines with crayon.
Paint the picture with numerous colors.
The crayon lines is likely to make the photo much easier to paint.
They will stop edges bleeding into one another.

Variation 4:

This is not a resist yet it’s an incredible extension from the previous activities.
Paint the photo with watercolors.
When the paint is dry, use crayons to add detail and depth of color.

RUBBING TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Rip off a small small note which is about the size a matchbox.
Use a crayon to scribble thickly on the paper.
Turn the paper over and utilizing your thumb rub the crayon on to the image.
This produces a very soft smooth effect.

Variation 2:

Color a region of the photo which has a textured object placed underneath.
Sandpaper, string, crumpled paper, bricks, bark, leaves, signs and rocks can produce interesting patterns. Experiment with a piece of blank paper first.

Variation 3:

Use grated pieces or shavings of crayon to create a swirling effect.
Sprinkle the crayon on to the photo then rub them your thumb.

This is effective if you are using different colors together.
It makes effective animal fur, storm clouds or grass.

TRANSPARENT TECHNIQUE

Go within the outline of the photo with black crayon.
Color the remainder of the photo thickly with crayon.
If possible use a smaller part of cotton wool or cloth to polish the photo.
Heat in the friction of rubbing melts the crayon and creates a smooth shiny effect.
Apply a smaller amount of vegetable oil to your cotton wool ball.
Gently rub the oil in the back of the photo.
The oil can make the image almost transparent.
Students might be due to the oil soaked balls in a very paint tray.
Encourage the crooks to go over and in the picture to spread the oil.
Hang the photo in a very classroom window to create a stained glass effect.
