RESIST TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Trace on the photocopied picture outline with crayon.
Thick lines work most effectively.
Brush on the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.
The waxed lines will resist the paint and the picture will glow through.

Variation 2:

Color a lot of the picture with crayon. Leave some areas white.
Brush in the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.

Variation 3:

Draw over the lines with crayon.
Paint the picture with many colors.
The crayon lines can make the photo better to paint.
They will minimize edges bleeding into one another.

Variation 4:

This is not a resist but it’s an incredible extension from the previous activities.
Paint the picture with watercolors.
When the paint is dry, use crayons to include detail and depth of color.

RUBBING TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Rip off a smaller small note that’s concerning the size a matchbox.
Use a crayon to scribble thickly on the paper.
Turn the paper over and taking advantage of your thumb rub the crayon on to the image.
This creates a very soft smooth effect.

Variation 2:

Color an area of the picture with a textured object placed underneath.
Sandpaper, string, crumpled paper, bricks, bark, leaves, signs and rocks can cause interesting patterns. Experiment having a piece of blank paper first.

Variation 3:

Use grated pieces or shavings of crayon to create a swirling effect.
Sprinkle the crayon on to the image then rub them your thumb.

TRANSPARENT TECHNIQUE

Go over the outline of the image with black crayon.
Color the remainder of the image thickly with crayon.
If possible use a tiny bit of cotton wool or cloth to polish the picture.
Heat from your friction of rubbing melts the crayon and produces a smooth shiny effect.
Apply a small amount of vegetable oil with a cotton wool ball.
Gently rub the oil in the back of the photo.
The oil is likely to make the photo almost transparent.
Students can be given the oil soaked balls in a paint tray.
Encourage the crooks to check out and on the picture to spread the oil.
Hang the photo inside a classroom window to generate a stained glass effect.
