Use print out coloring pages and something of the crayon processes for the following classroom art lesson.

RESIST TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Trace in the photocopied picture outline with crayon.
Thick lines work most effectively.
Brush in the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.
The waxed lines will resist the paint and also the picture will glow through.

Variation 2:

Color almost all of the picture with crayon. Leave some areas white.
Brush in the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.

Variation 3:

Draw over the lines with crayon.
Paint the photo with many colors.
The crayon lines will make the picture easier to paint.
They will eradicate edges bleeding into the other.

Variation 4:

This is not a resist yet it’s a great extension in the previous activities.
Paint the picture with watercolors.
When the paint is dry, use crayons to add detail and depth of color.

RUBBING TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Rip off a small small note that’s in regards to the height and width of a matchbox.
Use a crayon to scribble thickly on top of the paper.
Turn the paper over and taking advantage of your thumb rub the crayon on to the image.
This produces a very soft smooth effect.

Variation 2:

Color a place of the photo which has a textured object placed underneath.
Sandpaper, string, crumpled paper, bricks, bark, leaves, signs and rocks can create interesting patterns. Experiment with a piece of blank paper first.

Variation 3:

Use grated pieces or shavings of crayon to generate a swirling effect.
Sprinkle the crayon on to the photo after which rub them with your thumb.

This is effective the use of different colors together.
It makes effective animal fur, storm clouds or grass.

TRANSPARENT TECHNIQUE

Go on the outline of the picture with black crayon.
Color the remainder of the image thickly with crayon.
If possible use a little piece of cotton wool or cloth to polish the picture.
Heat from the friction of rubbing melts the crayon and produces a smooth shiny effect.
Apply a smaller amount of vegetable oil to a cotton wool ball.
Gently rub the oil within the back of the picture.
The oil can make the picture almost transparent.
Students could be because of the oil soaked balls in a paint tray.
Encourage these to look at and on the picture to spread the oil.
Hang the photo inside a classroom window to create a stained glass effect.
