RESIST TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Trace within the photocopied picture outline with crayon.
Thick lines perform best.
Brush in the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.

Color almost all of the picture with crayon. Leave some areas white.
Brush over the whole page with thin paint. Only use one color.

Draw over the lines with crayon.
Paint the picture with any number of colors.
The crayon lines is likely to make the photo much easier to paint.

They stop edges bleeding into the other person.

Variation 4:

This is not a resist but it’s an incredible extension from the previous activities.
Paint the image with watercolors.
When the paint is dry, use crayons to include detail and depth of color.

RUBBING TECHNIQUES

Variation 1:

Rip off a tiny sheet of paper that’s about the size a matchbox.
Use a crayon to scribble thickly on top of the paper.
Turn the paper over and taking advantage of your thumb rub the crayon on to the photo.
This produces a very soft smooth effect.

Variation 2:

Color a location of the picture using a textured object placed underneath.
Sandpaper, string, crumpled paper, bricks, bark, leaves, signs and rocks can produce interesting patterns. Experiment with a piece of blank paper first.

Variation 3:

Use grated pieces or shavings of crayon to produce a swirling effect.
Sprinkle the crayon on to the picture then rub them your thumb.

This is useful the use of different colors together.
It makes effective animal fur, storm clouds or grass.

TRANSPARENT TECHNIQUE

Go in the outline of the photo with black crayon.
Color the remainder of the photo thickly with crayon.
If possible use a tiny part of cotton wool or cloth to polish the photo.
Heat in the friction of rubbing melts the crayon and results in a smooth shiny effect.
Apply a small amount of vegetable oil to your cotton wool ball.
Gently rub the oil over the back of the image.
The oil will make the photo almost transparent.
Students can be given the oil soaked balls in a very paint tray.
Encourage the crooks to review and on the picture to spread the oil.
Hang the photo in the classroom window to create a stained glass effect.
